How to Create a Vintage Picnic Basket Even Yogi Would be Proud Of

While it's long been established that I love eating, I have yet to blog about my passion for eating outdoors.

Not on the open range or in front of a roaring campfire, but at a picnic table with a red and white checkered table cloth, a nice bottle of wine, thinly sliced ham, coleslaw, cornbread, potato salad, watermelon, and a pie.

Blame it on Yogi people,

When on a picnic there has to be pie.

And a really cool retro picnic basket like the kind he was partial to stealing...

While you can certainly purchase a picnic basket like that...

It will set you back between $75.00 and $125.00 and isn't really all that unique or original.

Which, in the grand scheme of things, I continue to work toward being unique, original, and creative.

Constantly feeding my passion for the Good Life while refusing to believe that living beautifully is connected to having large amounts of money.

Not that I think having large amounts of money is a bad thing. To the contrary. But not everyone is going to have pots of money at their disposal during their lives and its my belief that we can still have a slice of the pie for much less.

Living beautifully is about living well with what you have.

And gratitude is the key that opens most doors.

So it is with gratitude today that I talk about one of my treasures:

My picnic basket.

I got the idea to make one of my own years ago when I saw one of those fancy deals at a high end kitchen store. I love going shopping to places like that, gathering ideas, and then recreating things on my own.

Armed with the knowledge that I wanted to put something together, I got a picture in mind of the kind of basket I wanted: large, sturdy, and retro - preferably something made in the 1950's.

And started looking.

I searched garage sales, thrift stores, and flea markets, even braving the flourescent lighting and accompanying odour of Value Village in search of my plunder. And then one morning at a local flea market, there it was.

My basket.

For two dollars and fifty cents, I took it home.

Originally it had been a sewing basket, but I knew in it's next incarnation I was going to make it very happy. After all, hadn't I just freed it from a life spent in somebody's attic?

I decided it would be kind of fun and kitschy to fill it with melmac dishes from the 50's and 60's and finally found the set I wanted at one of the best garage sales I've ever been to.

It was a beautiful day in late July and two brothers had come up from Toronto to settle their mother's estate. I arrived early enough to pay my respects to a set of wonderful pyrex refrigerator dishes and mixing bowls...

And then found my Melmac dishes.

I lined the bottom of the basket with a vintage table cloth and then went to the dollar store where I purchased t-towels in complimentary colours to use as napkins, beads that I made into napkin rings, clear plastic cutlery, a red and white checkered table cloth, and funky retro, wine glasses.

In total, my picnic basket cost $12.00.

But more than that has been the fun of putting it together which has really been priceless.

Here's last night's picnic in our back yard to give you an idea of what the table setting looks like. I've used beautiful little hydrangeas from my garden tucked into vintage juice glasses for the center piece and mason jars as glassware which is always fun for outdoor eating.

Tomorrow we're going for an actual picnic at the beach. I'll take lots of pictures and will be doing a picnic recipe blog on The Kitchen Witch.

Until then, if you have any great recipe or picnic tips to share, please do! When you go on a picnic what are your "must have" foods, games, and equipment?

As always, enquiring minds want to know...

Very cool picnic basket - and I am jealous. If you eat outdoors here you will either:
1) Be carried away by the giant mosquitoes!
or
2) Faint from the 100 degree heat!

But I must tell you that I am feeling your infuence today. I went out this morning and bought myself a vintage rosewood drop-leaf table. Luckily it matches my china cabinet perfectly! It also came with the felt backed table pads, and two additional leaves ... and fully expanded will seat 8 to 10 people comfortably! And I was so inspired that I have spent the entire afternoon rearranging and cleaning everyting in the main rooms of my house. I see a "fancy schmancy" dinner party at my house in the very near future! Yep, the Maven infuence is alive and well here in Northeast Florida!

HI Mave! LOOOOOVE your picnic basket AND that you (and I) believe you CAN have a GOOD life without buckets full of money. You hit the nail on the head when you said that GRATITUDE is the key!!!! That is the truth! Now, my favcorite picnic foods are burgers with cheese, tomatoes and mushrooms, potato salad, (my recipe), baked beans, deviled eggs and pie for dessert!!!!!!!!!! Be still my heart! Hope you had a great 4th! Hugs, Pinky

One of our cousins gave us a picnic basket for our wedding which at the time I thought was odd. It's an old fashioned kind, lined in green and tanned checks.

Turns out it was one of the best gifts we ever received. We made a picnic lunch a couple of weeks back and took it on the boat with some friends. Perfect!

Your basket is gorgeous and I love that you searched high and low for it because that is so much more meaningful than opening a catalog and pulling out a credit card!

My picnic basket is one of my favorite things & have had it at least 20 years. Especially enjoy taking it to the beach.

And I enjoy giving picnic baskets as wedding gifts...

I love to eat outdoors too. The food is better, the conversation longer and such fun collecting the dishes, baskets etc...
Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you're enjoying this post :-) And LOL!! MM - you are absolutely right, this is the offending picnic basket from lunch with TH a few years ago... and I suspect I might have a similar tale to tell after tonight's al fresco dining experience.

What a great idea doing picnic baskets as wedding gifts - I'm going to have to remeber that.

Happy Sunday all!

Hello Maven! Thanks so much for dropping by my blog so we could be introduced! I love what I'm reading her and can't wait to check out Kitchen Witch as well. :)

Your picnic basket is exquisite! I just love everything about it ... and those plates are so charming too.

Since I'm a city gal, I don't do much in the way of picnicing ... but I sure enjoy reading about it. Cheers!

That's what I enjoy so much about your blog - the city girl aspect :-)

Thanks for stopping by! I'm on holidays right now and I will be trying some of those drink recipes!
